Log Home Building Course

Probably the only way to build mortgage free.

Can be easily done on your own.

What I do.

I present a weekend Log Home Building Course, which, in just 2 days teaches you all the methods and techniques required to build your own environmentally sustainable real log home or cabin, on your own, mortgage free.

You do not need to be particularly practical and no previous construction experience is necessary.

All courses are taught by Roy Trembath in his well known hand built personal log home in Wilderness Heights, Garden Route, South Africa (pictured on this website).

The South African Log Home Builders Association has been established with the express purpose of teaching people to build solid log homes with their own cash.

Even if you do not intend to construct your own home, this course will teach you what to look out for if someone else builds for you.

The course takes only takes 2 days (Usually Saturday and Sunday).

Dates for the courses are announced about 2 months prior to them taking place.

The course is structured to be easily understood by people of all abilities.

I focus on teaching sound, tried and tested principles.

It is presented in English.

Really good news: Huge discount

For the months of June and July the course fee has been discounted from R3000 to R2000 per person, due to the fact that we have (for a trial period) canned an expensive advertising campaign, which is a major overhead. A decision was taken to pass this saving on to you. Everyone benefits! (except the advertising guys).

So far the response has been fantastic, this will determine if the special price will be extended, or if we go back to advertising and charging the full price again.....we will see...

Some reasons for building and living in a real log home:

  1. Build with your own cash - can cost less than 10% of conventional structures i.e a saving of up to 90%!

  2. Uses truly sustainable resources - trees can re-grow many times during the life- span of the house.

  3. Structurally very simple and strong - hurricane and earthquake resistant.

  4. Very low maintenance - no sealing or painting inside or out.

  5. It is far less work to build your own log home than it is to work & pay off a 20 year mortgage.

  6. Life span of structure can be 100+ years - the greensted  log chapel in England is over 1000 years old.

  7. No special skills required. - can be built by any able bodied person - on their own.

  8. No major time investment - The required knowledge is taught in just 2 days.

  9. Minimal equipment required - all equipment can fit in the boot of a car and be carried to site.

  10. Can be built to almost any size or design.

  11. Fun: Building a log home is probably the most fun you can have which is still legal.

  12. Great thermal insulation factor - natural temperature regulation - cheap to live in.

  13. Excellent acoustics - music sounds great in a log home.

  14. Very healthy to live in - read 'Wood, people and health'.

  15. Log homes are aesthetically pleasing and very comfortable.

  16. Timber in unsealed log form naturally maintains a healthy balance of indoor air moisture levels.

  17. Economical, I have built my home (featured on this website) for R880 per sq/m, all in, complete project. This took place in 2006, at the time the average conventional building cost was running at about R7000 per sq/m. Right now the average conventional building costs are around R8500 per sq/m, so I expect my  per sq/m cost will have also risen a bit, although not much.
